Safety Information

Essential tips for a safe and enjoyable trip to the Maldives.

Water Safety

The Maldives is surrounded by open ocean with strong currents, especially in channels between atolls. Always swim in designated areas, follow your guide's instructions during snorkelling and diving trips, and never swim alone. If you are not a confident swimmer, wear a life jacket — most suppliers provide them at no extra charge. Rip currents can occur even on calm days; if caught in one, swim parallel to the shore rather than against it.

Sun Protection

The Maldives sits close to the equator, and UV levels are intense year-round. Apply reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen every two hours, wear a rash guard or UV-protective clothing during water activities, and stay hydrated. Heatstroke and severe sunburn are among the most common tourist health issues — take shade breaks, especially between 10 AM and 3 PM.

Marine Life Awareness

Maldivian reefs are home to a rich diversity of marine life. Most species are harmless, but avoid touching corals (they are fragile and some can sting), stonefish, lionfish, and sea urchins. Reef sharks are common and not aggressive toward humans. Manta rays and whale sharks are gentle and best observed at a respectful distance. Always follow your guide's briefing before entering the water.

Travel Health

No special vaccinations are required for the Maldives, though routine vaccines should be up to date. Bring any personal medications with you — pharmacies outside Malé are limited. The main hospitals are Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé and ADK Hospital. Resorts typically have an on-site clinic or nurse. For anything serious, medical evacuation to Malé or Colombo may be necessary, which is why travel insurance with evacuation cover is strongly recommended.

Weather & Natural Hazards

The southwest monsoon (May–October) brings occasional rough seas and rain; the northeast monsoon (November–April) is generally calmer and drier. Severe weather can cause last-minute changes to boat transfers and water activities. Suppliers will notify you of cancellations — these are fully refundable. The Maldives has a tsunami early warning system; follow resort or guesthouse staff instructions in the event of an alert.
